Salwa: Kornel, let’s start with your wonderful journey until you became the music director of this unique place. Please share some thoughts about your background and how you found yourself in this very special role.

Kornel Magyar: My journey was intertwined with music and culture. I am a performance artist and music critic from Hungary, with a special passion for traditional and classical music. Since 2001, I have immersed myself in performing and teaching various genres of traditional music. As Music Director, I now have the honor of assembling the hotel's music library, fostering partnerships with local music venues, and crafting unforgettable music experiences for our guests.

A visionary concept at Aria Hotel

Salwa: Before we continue exploring the hotel’s charming features, let us know the driving and creative force behind this concept. Can you introduce us to the driving and creative force of Aria Hotel Budapest?

Kornel Magyar: Absolutely. Aria Hotel Budapest, this harmonious combination of music and luxury, is the brainchild of Henry Kallan, an experienced New York hotelier. Mr Kallan, who also owns the Library Hotel Group, envisioned a property that would reflect Budapest's ancient music traditions. The visionary interior designer behind the scenes is multi-awarded and native of Hungary, Mr. Zoltan Varro: he helped transform the audio phenomenon into a visual experience.

Salwa: The hotel’s location is really special. How does its proximity to St. Stephen's Basilica enhance the guest experience?

Kornel Magyar: Our website is truly a gem. Being in the shadow of St. Stephen's Basilica means our guests can easily explore Budapest's famous landmarks, from the Chain Bridge to the Parliament. Furthermore, our awards, such as being named Best Hotel in the World by the TripAdvisor Traveler Awards in 2017, and Best Hotel in Central Europe by the Condé Nast Readers Awards in 2018, reflect our commitment to excellence. In recent years in 2023, Aria has been ranked among the top 5 hotels in Central Europe.

The elegance of design in Aria

Salwa: The design and structure of the hotel is really attractive. Can you describe how this former bank was transformed into a music haven, and the unique design elements that make Aria Hotel Budapest special?

Kornel Magyar: The transformation of a building is a story about rising again. Formerly a bank, it was revived in 2015 as a tribute to the music. The hotel is divided into four wings, each one dedicated to a different music genre: classical, opera, jazz, and modern. Our Music Garden, an inner courtyard with a glass roof and a corridor of piano keys, is the heart of the hotel.

Salwa: The rooms at the Aria Hotel Budapest are named after music legends. What can you share about these unique rooms and the experiences they offer?

Kornel Magyar: Our 49 rooms and suites bear the names of the greats, creating an atmosphere in tune with the spirit of every genre of music. It features modern techniques, custom-made furniture, and large drawings of music icons by famous artist Josef Blecha. A stay in one of our rooms is truly a unique musical journey.

Salwa: Let’s talk about the magical “Music Garden”. What can guests expect when they visit, and what other facilities are available to them?

Kornel Magyar: “Music Garden” is our pride and in it a grand piano designed by Boganyi can be found under a glass roof. It is a hub for events, including daily wine and cheese receptions. Our extensive library of music and books can be accessed here, and we offer a range of additional services and facilities to ensure our guests have an unforgettable stay.

Our Liszt Café offers the opportunity to enjoy French macarons and other delicious foods, all influenced by the music of Aria Hotel Budapest.

Kornel Magyar: High Note Sky Bar offers stunning views of Budapest, including St. Stephen's Basilica. It is a sophisticated rooftop bar serving quality cocktails, wines, and delicious food. It was even recognized as one of the top 10 best rooftop bars in the world by Condé Nast Traveler in 2018. Guests can enjoy the enchanting views and enjoy quality cocktails, wine and delicious food.
