Psychology theories support the idea that a person can have more control over their emotions than they think. There are also proven strategies to help a person wake up happier every day, as follows:

1. Gratitude

There's a powerful technique rooted in mindfulness and psychology that can transform your morning mood: simply starting the day with a moment of gratitude. Research has shown that expressing gratitude can lead to higher levels of positive emotions such as happiness, enjoyment, and even love.

For example, when one opens one's eyes in the morning one can replace rushing through today's to-do list or dwelling on yesterday's problems by taking a moment to think about something for which one is grateful. It can be something as simple as warm sunlight streaming through a window or just starting another day of life. This small act of recognition can change your mindset and set a positive tone for the day. Happiness does not happen on its own; it is a habit that is developed.

2. Practice morning meditation

Meditation is a cornerstone of mindfulness practices, and for good reason. Practicing quieting the mind and being in the moment can have profound effects on overall health. By incorporating just a few minutes of meditation into your morning routine, your mood can be dramatically improved and you can start your day energized and optimistic.

As Jon Kabat-Zinn, the famous mindfulness teacher, once said, “Mindfulness is a way of validating ourselves and our experience.” Meditation doesn't have to be complicated. Just finding a quiet place, closing your eyes, then focusing on your breathing for five minutes can make a big difference.

3. Accept today as it is

Applying the wisdom of acceptance and letting go is about understanding that life is full of ups and downs, but every day is a new opportunity. Applying this wisdom in the morning can help one wake up happier. Instead of waking up with fear or anxiety about what the new day may bring, one can try waking up with acceptance.

In other words, to accept that there will be challenges, but also opportunities to grow and learn. You can accept that things may not go as planned, but that's okay. This does not mean that the person is passive or submissive. It's about approaching the day with an open mind and heart, ready to take on whatever comes the way.

4. Engage in mental movement

The morning should not be devoted merely to rushing about household chores and getting ready for work. It can actually be an ideal time to engage in mindful movement. Mindfulness is about being fully present in the present moment, and what better way to do that than by moving your body? This could be a gentle yoga flow, a brisk walk in the park, or even some simple stretching exercises at home.

The key is to focus on what the body feels during movement - sensing muscle action, heartbeat and breath flow - which can increase feelings of well-being and happiness.

5. Embrace generosity of spirit

One of the most satisfying ways to start the day is to embrace generosity of spirit, which is specifically about offering more kindness, understanding, and compassion to others. Embracing generosity can lead to profound personal transformation and higher levels of happiness.

If a person does something nice for someone else, they can be surprised by the positive effect it has on their mood.

6. Savor the morning meal

In our fast-paced world, breakfast has unfortunately become a rush for many, who eat while checking emails or catching up on the news, barely tasting what they are eating. If one can take the time to savor the morning meal, it leads to a significant improvement in mood and a calm start to the day with a positive and thoughtful attitude.

7. Cultivate a positive mindset

The key to waking up happier every day is in the mind. Thoughts have a powerful impact on your mood and overall outlook on life. Developing a positive mindset upon waking up may mean replacing the first thought of the day from a negative one to a positive one. Instead of thinking about all the stress that awaits one, one can focus on the opportunities and possibilities that the new day brings.

8. Embrace silence

In today's noisy and busy era, silence is often avoided. Mornings are filled with news, music, podcasts, or constant thoughts about the day ahead. Embracing silence can make a person happier, because it teaches them full awareness of the value of the moment they are living in the moment.

Psychology experts advise that instead of immediately reaching for the phone or turning on the TV upon waking up, a person can try sitting in silence for a few minutes. Silence provides the opportunity to connect with the inner self, meditate, and live simply. It helps to start the day from a place of calm and peace, rather than stress and rush.
