Malak's story spread widely on social media on Sunday night, after a video was circulated by Iraqi activists, showing the girl setting fire to her body, until an elderly man intervened and extinguished it.

Later, she appeared in another clip from the hospital, screaming in pain from her severe burns, which sparked widespread public anger.

Later, it became clear that the young woman is a married angel, and what happened to her was due to a quarrel that broke out with her husband after he abused her and severely beat her, and prevented her from visiting her family’s home for more than 8 continuous months, until her ways of life narrowed, so she set herself on fire.

The husband stood watching the fire devour his wife's body, observing the scene, until his father intervened and extinguished the fire and transported the girl to the hospital.

After the spread of the videos, the story developed greatly, becoming an issue of public opinion in Iraq, especially after information was circulated that the abusive husband was a responsible officer.

Many parties, led by the girl's family, accused the husband of what happened.

A medical source confirmed to the Arab News Agency that the burns on Angel's body are many and eloquent, explaining that the medical staff is working hard to save her life.

While Malak's sister published a video clip in which she accused her sister's husband and his family of being the reason for what happened to her, because of the bad treatment and deprivation of her most basic rights.

Social networking sites circulated the incident with great anger, calling for an investigation into the incident and the imposition of punishment and retribution for those behind the burning and torture of this girl and the reduction of domestic violence in general.

Mother reveals secrets

In a special statement to the mother of the young woman, Malak, with a local media outlet, the mother confirmed that when she was informed of the incident, she was prevented from visiting her daughter, and when she asked about the cause of the fire, she received conflicting information from her daughter's husband's family.

And she added that when she arrived at the hospital, the family of her daughter-in-law told her that Malak was fine, and that what she had suffered were just minor burns, and when she came to see her, they prevented her from entering.

But she insisted, after hearing her daughter's moaning, and took a quick look and found an angel completely covered with medical gauze, confirming her poor condition.

The mother also pointed out that the husband's father, when Malak arrived at the hospital, claimed that she was his daughter, and he signed the entry papers.

Until Malak was able to speak, and she told her mother that a violent quarrel had occurred between her and her husband, so the latter beat her severely, noting that traces of bruises were still present on her body. .

Najaf Governorate is on alert

For his part, the governor of Najaf, Louay Al-Yasiri, yesterday, Sunday, directed the formation of an investigation team into the incident of a woman from Najaf being burned, provided that it gives details of the incident within 24 hours, according to what the governor’s media office said in a brief statement, which Al-Arabiya.net obtained a copy. from him.

Najaf Deputy Hashem Al-Karaawi contacted the Police Directorate and the Intelligence Directorate regarding the young woman, Malak.

Based on the information, the Malak family has filed a fundamentalist lawsuit at the Mujtaba Police Station, and all legal measures will be taken by the concerned authorities.

The Supreme Judicial Council said that "the complainant registered a complaint before the Najaf Investigation Court against her husband, claiming that he beat her and burned herself as a result of using violence against her, but her husband did not extinguish her, and that her father-in-law was the one who took her to the hospital after he extinguished her."

The Minister of the Interior enters the crisis line

For his part, the Minister of Interior, Yassin Al-Yasiri, entered the crisis line, and the ministry stated that the Najaf Governorate Police Commander, Brigadier Faiq Al-Fatlawi, briefed the minister on the measures taken.

The statement added that the minister ordered the formation of a committee to follow up the implementation of judicial decisions in this case, headed by the provincial police chief and the supervisory departments, working on implementation procedures and keeping him informed of the results.

In addition, the Minister assigned the Undersecretary for Police Affairs, Lieutenant-General Imad Muhammad, and the Governor of Najaf, Louay Al-Yasiri, to follow up on the full case and inform him of the results.

It is noteworthy that Malak's story was not the first of its kind in Iraq. From time to time, social media transmit similar stories, but what happened to Malak was very harsh, which renewed calls for the perpetrator to be held accountable and to impose the harshest penalties on him and to end violence in general.
